Explore the pretty resort town of Taormina, claimed by many to be the most beautiful place in Sicily. It is said that it was Taormina itself that first attracted tourists to Sicily in the 18th and 19th centuries.
A favourite retreat for artists, writers, actors and intellectuals, by the turn of the century Taormina became a popular vacation spot for such high society families as the Rothchilds, Krupps and Vanderbilts. But a significant number of visitors are drawn by its notoriety as a capital of gay culture.
A frequent resident was Oscar Wilde, who worked on poems, essays and plays here. The town was also home base for Wilhelm von Gloeden, a German-born photographer known for his pastoral nude studies of tawny, smooth young Sicilian boys. With the rise of Fascism, the gay scene faded, but after the war, Taormina regained its allure, becoming a celebrity hangout for Truman Capote, Tennessee Williams, Christian Dior and others.
Taormina is the perfect place for a walking tour: there are a plenty of easily accessible historical monuments to see.
You will start a walking tour with a chance to admire the ruins of the Roman Odeon, a small Imperial Age theatre perhaps used for rehearsals, the 15th century Corvaja Palace (outside) and the 17th century church of Santa Caterina.
From here we shall walk to the Greek Theatre. Begun by the Greeks in the 4th-3rd century BC, the theatre was enlarged by the Romans some centuries later and is now a close second to nearby Syracuse in terms of importance and size. Breathtaking view from the top!
