Usually, regular tours don’t tell the whole history and hide some parts to the gay and lesbian travelers.
The Untold History Tours are inspired to give the LGBT community a view of gay and lesbian personalities from the past, stories part of our own history, that make us more aware that we’re not the first ones and surely will not be the last ones.
Our original Untold History Tours are unique. This tour at the Vatican Museums will show you what one of the greatest artists of all : Michelangelo.
The tour starts with the Vatican Museums’ tour. At first sight, you will be caught by the modern entrance built for the Jubilee in 2000, but then –inside the museums– the Sistine Chapel will amaze you.
The ceiling was painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512. The order was originally to paint the twelve apostles, however Michelangelo demanded a free hand in the pictorial content of the scheme. He painted a series of nine pictures now worldwide famous.
However, the Church had some big homosexual scandals in the XVIth century: for example, Pope Julius III and his young lover Innocenzo del Monte, who became Cardinal at the age of 17.
You will be able to see the paintings of St. Sebastian, a Roman soldier and Christian Saint, patron of homosexuality. The history says that during the Black Plague St. Sebastian was invoked against pestilence and the identification of him with homosexuality strenghtened during Renaissance, when some artists painted him as a beautiful naked young boy tied up to a trunk or suffering the torments of piercing arrows.
Also, one of the biggest love stories in Rome was the one that Hadrianus, a Roman Emperor, had with Antinous. They were together until Antinous died drowned on a trip up the Nile in 130. Here you will see their sculptures and hear the story.
One of the masterpieces that you will see is the Torso del Belvedere, that probably represent the body of a muscle bear guy. It constitutes a real praise of the male body, that mostly of all of the artists tented to represent in their artworks.

We had a fantastic tour of the Vatican with Paolo from Quiiky. Paolo was knowledgeable, personable, fun and really gave us a different insight into the history of art and the gay artists that are part of the Vatican’s history and more! Highly recommended!
We adored our Quiiky tour of the Vatican with our guide Claudio. We had been a little apprehensive about visiting the Vatican but this tour is the way to go! Claudio had an expert knowledge of the art collection and we enjoyed hearing the \”other\”, more scandalous stories of the private lives of Michelangelo and the popes. We loved our visit to the museums, Sistine Chapel, grotto and St Peters – I recommend joining the queue and adding on the view from the dome of the basilica – well worth the stairs!
I highly recommend Quiiky Travel for any guided visit to Rome or Italy. I was both surprised and entertained by everything GAY I learned about the Vatican on my tour. They are passionate about providing an excellent travel experience and I have no doubt that you would enjoy one of their tours or travel products.
First had a wonderful pre-cruise Quikky tour in Venice. Our guide was super friendly, knowledgeable, and a great deal of fun. Then I went on a tour of the Vatican and our tour guide was incredible. He is an expert on the Vatican and on the pertinent gay history (which turns out to be much more than you might even think). He literally made the Vatican come alive and provided one of the more fascinating tours I have taken anywhere. And the two wonderful owners of Quiiky picked us up and took us on a vehicular tour of Rome. Others got back from Rome complaining of the crowds and the heat… we got back energized, happy, and filled with fascinating information after an afternoon filled with fun and personalized care. Don’t make the mistake thinking you will get an equivalent tour from a straight guide/company — if you are gay, Quiiky is the way to go.
